Overview:
Athena is a game about the Greek goddess who gets tired of being at the TOP OF OLYMPUS and goes on a [terrible] adventure. Throughout the game you encounter numerous enemies, strange power-ups that don’t really seem to power you up and unyielding controls that make this a horrible addition to any library. Also, no fucking checkpoints.
Visuals:
The visuals in Athena are god awful. This is clearly an early Nintendo game due to it’s use of bright vibrant colors and horrible sprite flickering. The power-ups are barely represented on the screen so when you pick them up you really don’t know what the fuck you’re getting yourself in to. The enemies are also completely indecipherable as you can’t tell if what you’re killing is a pig creature or a goat creature or anything whatsoever.
The boss is also a big fucking joke when it comes to visual fidelity.
Audio:
Like the visuals, the audio does not fare any better. This is a textbook example of annoying sounds and music in a game and should be studied for what NOT to do in game design.
Completion:
The attacks in this game are atrocious. You start out with a little kick that does not have the reach you would hope for in an action platformer nor do any of the weapons you acquire improve upon this fact. The only weapon that seemed to really help was a ball and chain one, but that one couldn’t break through blocks consistently.
Death 1 couldn’t have come at a quicker time when one of the first enemies in the game deciding to fall from the heavens onto my face. Luckily the game’s controls are so bad I could not move out of the way in time and I met my demise.
Death 2 was a little more epic as I battled through horrible stage after horrible stage to get to the boss tree. Here, right before I was going to fight him, I was fully decked out in a nice set of armor only for a fucking POWER-UP to negate it and I was left with my kick and leotard. Because of this conundrum the boss one-shotted me and I, again, met my maker. Death 3 never happened as I could not take the game any more and gave up. Let that be indicative of how this game truly
