Overview

Air Fortess is an alien invasion game with you navigating a single warrior [who’s name is Hal] through foreign terrain to prevent the many air fortresses from taking over your world.  Luckily you have your fuckin’ rad Sphinx ship to aid you in this task so it’s up to you to destroy these alien sacks once and for all.

Visuals

This game has all the hallmarks of video game graphic design with a disproportioned protagonist careening through each room that looks like the previous one you left.  Your character, in the beginning, is hard to distinguish just what it is because of the limited color palette which makes you look like a flying Sphinx.  Later on in the level you hop out and realize you’re just a dude.  As you go through the rooms you fight some pretty bland looking enemies which all look like Roombas, who in turn guard a giant orange.  I’m not making this up.

Audio

The music is what makes this game pretty top tier stuff.  From the start of the game you’re greeted with some pretty machismo tunes of a proud starfighter going through space effin’ shit up for a noble cause.  All of this changes when you defeat the Giant Orange and the music gets quite moody but doesn’t last long as your ship is usually a few feet away to move on to the next spot.

Sound effects in this game are appropriate with enemies and your character alike making the right sounding beeps and boops…and LASER NOISES…that fit this type of game.  Nothing really special.

Completion

i first started out on Air Fortress 1 trying to get to grips just what the hell I was doing.  Flying around in my cat creature, I plowed through the low tier enemies getting E and B bubbles to fill up my E and B meter of course.  It wasn’t until I destroyed the conniving enemies that look like an awesome power up [they were spinning!] that I realized this was just part of level 1.  It was here where my mind was blown as, apparently, I wasn’t a Sphinx looking creature, but a dude in a hazmat suit with a gun!

I went through the treacherous rooms destroying enemies with my piece all the while my E meter was draining with each movement, hover and gun shot.  Luckily for me it uses modern shooting design and regenerates!  This helped as I got hit a couple of times from my robotic nemesis and crushed their leader, which looked like a giant orange.  Fortunately this ended the level with some pretty moody music and I was off to air fortress 2.

Here I wasted all my while in my ship against some spinning wheel enemies and then crashed into the wall while trying to get an E bubble.  I can say, though, that I had a great time with this game and am looking forward to playing it again.
