Duke Nukem: Time to Kill

Overview:

A third person action shooter game featuring the movie quoting (stealing?) Duke Nukem as he takes it to the aliens to show them who’s boss. It plays like a better version of the original PS1 Tomb Raider, which is saying a lot, but by the time this game came out it was a tired genre. You go through many stages across multiple worlds and time period trying to stop the big bad. When I was a kid and saw this game, I so wish I could play it because, as a 14 year old, I thought it would be so mature. I only had a Nintendo 64 at this point so I never got to play it. Also there are strip clubs.

With working mirrors!

Visuals:

The game, for its time, really doesn’t look too bad, all things considered. When I went into it I was expecting a quick early 3D game that controlled like but and was just a mess but it actually looked pretty nice. Duke moves fluidly and the enemies stand out pretty well. The only thing that sucks is the first world is so uninspired and just mazelike it turns you off pretty quickly.

I had to drown myself…

Audio:

One of the reasons why I really wanted to play this game was because they had Stabbing Westward heavily promoted in the commercial. Lo and behold they are only in the opening cinematic. The rest of the noises are just your garden variety grunts from the enemies and ambient music. Duke is quipping away, repeatedly, about whatever he’s doing so that’s fun. The aforementioned strip club does have scandalous noises going on which make me pretty glad I never actually played this cause I would have been very secretive about it.

Completion:

I had to stop this game because I got into a part of the level I couldn’t get out of. I don’t know if I was missing something but I swam around for 5 or so minutes and just resorted to drowning myself. I did this because I was planning to keep playing but the checkpoint was so far away and the gameplay didn’t hook me enough to want to do the whole thing over again. I did collect two of the three keys so I’m assuming that would have opened up the worlds. The rest of the screenshots for other worlds do look interesting.
