Overview:
A side scrolling Mortal Kombat game about Sub-Zero that gives more story to the Mortal Kombat franchise? SIGN ME UP! You take control of the titular character as you go from level to level fighting bad guys, escaping deadly traps, gaining experience points, and performing your signature moves all in service of the god Shinnok and his evil henchman, the vile Quan-Chi! The Mortal Kombat controls are all here so everything feels super familiar. Oh, and there is a “turn around” button.
Visuals:
In the era of the budding 3-D game, MKM utilizes a 2.5D view and the sprites are actually quite gorgeous, all things considered. The backgrounds are pretty bland in comparison but that’s to be expected for an early PlayStation game. The cutscenes are something amazing because they use actors, badly dressed in character, in a CG world. I love it.
Audio:
Ain’t nothing to write home about. It sounds like Mortal Kombat with all the moody songs and fighting sound bites. I love Sub-Zero’s scream when he jumps to his death.
Completion:
I wasted all of my lives in the first level by the same type of booby trap. Two were because of me due to me not remembering to run. One was due to an enemy punching me into the trap. I’ve been playing this game off and on for probably close to 20 years and I always die at these fucking traps.
