Overview:

What if Mario Kart was more “realistic”?  What I mean by this is what if it featured real cars, more racers, more aggressive powerups, “real” world tracks, and more fake social elements that allowed you to level up?  That description is what Blur is.  It was developed by Bizarre Creations who are famous for developing the Project Gotham Games and the Geometry Wars games.  Those games bleed into this game with everything.  This game is fucking cool.  Or it was because in what seems like 6 months after releasing Bizarre was shut down and the IP basically abandoned.

It really doesn’t look bad…

Visuals:

While this game does suffer from the 2000s brown smudgyness all over the place, it more than makes up for it with all the colors of the powerups.  This is what I meant about the Geometry Wars inspirations because you just see crazy balls of glowing light and electricity all over the place.  The weapons are leaving trails of destruction in their wake and everything just looks holographic.  The cars look sharp as fuck as well with their models being super detailed.  These are real world cars too.  None of that kart bullshit.  The tracks are ok and dull but they aren’t really supposed to be that enticing since the race is the action.  Mind you I only played three tracks, though.

Even the Win screen looks cool!

Audio:

I’m in a mixed bag with this section.  I couldn’t really hear any background music or anything so I’m not sure if it was there.  But the main thing is just the sound effects.  The powerups all sound so damn cool.  The crashes sound super metallic and devastating.  I wish I could say more about it but it really is just super cool with how everything sounds…except the music.

Screenshots don’t show the chaos…

Completion:

As stated above I only played three races.  Two of them were actual races with 20 cars all vying for the number 1 spot, with me taking the top trophy in both races.  The third race was just a time attack sort of thing where you shot “bolts” at other cars.  Every car you destroyed you added 5 seconds to your time with a score target of 80 seconds.  I met this target and was pretty happy.  I was going to stop it there to write this but then the game crashed.  So I guess it was poetic justice.  I wanna play more of this, I really do.

The “red shell” equivalent…
